  1. [Apologies for posting this question in any new threads with Update Patches, but until someone is kind enough to provide an answer I am hoping that with as many eyes as possible…]

Is there a universal “you’re supposed to do this” with Update Patches?? (I have not seen guidance/instructions for updates like there always is for other add-ons like mods, incest patches, etc., and there is nothing in the FAQ.)

1a. Am I supposed to always leave the update patch as a STANDALONE FOLDER and start play from there?
    OR
1b. Am I supposed to COPY/REPLACE the new files into the existing folder containing the previous version is (overwriting some existing files like you do with many mods & other patches)?

2a. Is it better to DL the FULL NEW version – whenever host limits allow – because all changes are seamlessly pre-integrated by the dev in that big file?
    OR
2b. Is it always OK to DL the smaller PATCH file because there are never any problems with patching and I can safely assume that everything will recognize what it’s a-supposed to recognize and be fully compatible without fear of errors such as lost saves, etc.?

    3. If it is fine to “patch” instead of fully replace, is there a functional limit to HOW MANY TIMES patching can be expected to work perfectly before the risk of errors starts to increase and replacing the whole dang thing is a better option? Probably a bad analogy, but if a pipe starts to spring leaks you can patch with duct tape a few times, but at some point you are better off replacing the pipe.

I would appreciate any suggestions from users or moderators. I don’t want to get into a long-running game and shoot myself in the foot by losing all progress by making a dumb rookie mistake.

    1. I’ve had this question for a long time. It’s not in Others which is a FAQ catefgory either.

      1. Thanks. I’ve posted the question multiple times and asked the site, but never get an answer. Glad to know it isn’t just me.

    2. Apology accepted. We are not all socially inept zoomers and millens. I fully understand.
      Short:
0: no universal “supposed to do” process; 1a: no; 1b: yes, usually; 2a+b: update former to next version – prob 2b, else/big version jump – 2a; 3: in theory no limit, okay analogy actually (P.S. – never start gambling pls. XD)

0+1: The game is created with Ren’Py engine, so stated on dev’s itch. Updates for other engines may work differently. Also it depends on dev/modder, how they establish the procedure. A patch/mod should come with instructions to read (text file) when you unpack the archive in an empty folder. St it’s only one file, though.
      Rule of thumb with Ren’Py:
      – update/exchange; place files+folders in ‘game’ folder, let overwrite old files if prompted.
      – mod/addon; place extra files+folders in ‘game’ folder, may not always overwrite files.
…’Game’ – assets+stuff goes in there. Engine stuff is in other folders, better be not touched. Is how it is intended and I had experienced it.
Also, if you are advised to put single files into folders of your unpacked game, you do. st the files do not come with a ‘structure’ (i.e. presorted into their resp. folders) to copy it all over into the ‘game’ directory. So you do it by hand, as ordered. Can happen if only some few files are changed/added.

2+3: You keep for a while the archive of older game version which worked, update the unpacked game files. So you can get files from archive and try again, in case.
      – Make sure updated game is starting. If yes, you can assume it will run 9 of 10 times.
      – If need be, apply a mod – new test start. Does it come up? It might work.
      – If sth is screwed, engine should show an ‘exception’ screen, normally right at start.
Even if you did eth right, it can still show you an error occasionally while playing. Can be bec a file is missing, or some rpy asset/file links got screwed, and only later Ren’Py stumbles over that hiccup.
Copy exception file aside (there is a button for it), check usual places (fora, dev webpages) for the message, most prob others already had this happen to them.
Ren’Py often gives indication what went wrong with the last lines of the message. If there is sth clearly screwed the dev/modder will create a patch to fix. Hopefully soon. Such is the life/hardship of a beta tester of lewd games.
You dl a full version when you have not played a game for a few iterations (e.g. v0.3 then, v0.6 now). Code may have been restructured, changed significantly. Best to start anew, clean sheet, saves may not work with new versions either. Is how I do. St fresh saves are even provided.
Updating former to next version, if offered, should not pose a problem. Applying update after update, to finally be en par, might work or not. I would rather opt for new dl.
      – Be aware, mods created for older game version can/potentially *will* brake a new one.
      – You have forgotten you installed one, it will create exception other players do not get.
Have fun finding out now what’s wrong…
So fresh install/unpack, no mods applied, is best. Then add potential update. After test run, apply mod. Ymmv. Some mods are advertised non-game-dependant, means they may work with newer versions. For others is clearly stated they are *incompatible* with newer game versions. Need to wait for updated mod.

Protip: ask the dev how to do updating of this game, post the answer here. To ensure ppl get to know.

      1. Thank you for the extended reply! I had given up hope of getting any answers so I had not checked back in a while. Will take a close read offline, but thanks for the time spent reading and answering. 🙂 Seems weird to me that devs copy character templates (same faces in many games), plot structure, GUI behavior, etc….but there is no standard method up updating. But I’m not a programmer of this kind of content, so I know I’m the dummy here.
