In medieval terms; while it wasn’t as common as some think, it did happen – 14-15 was an acceptable age to be married. You were more likely to be betrothed as a toddler, in parents’ hopes for a strong union and political advantage (especially the nobles and royals) but many commoners couldn’t afford dowrys, and frankly if a girl liked a guy and let him have his way, there’s a reason it was called a shotgun wedding.

Am I defending the idea of underaged sex; no. Not at all. I am pointing out there’s a reason the troupe exists. There is a point to debate that by 14-15 anyone generally has some idea of what they’re interested in and willing to do sexually, whether they’re ready for the all responsibilities incumbant or not. There are also plenty of 20-25 year old women who will take a 45+ year old man as their lover. Celine Dion was famously groomed from 14 years old by her eventual and only as far as I’m aware, husband. So it’s not like it doesn’t happen in reality as well. Personally I find their entire relationship creepy as hell, but it was her choice to take him, and never to try again once he was dead. There’s also a distinct but archaic economically based reason for the younger girl and older guy being far more commonplace than the older woman and younger man troupe. Lolita’s also a fairly widely known tale, and a classic in some views. In the vein of perhaps Dorian Grey… which was taken in the wrong context by most during it’s original publication I might add. It’s also become an active sexual arctype.
